It’s legal, medicinally and recreationally, and now Lake Superior State University in the U.P. is offering cannabis classes starting this fall.

LSSU will offer two marijuana related majors in the fall, one in chemistry, the other in business.

Officials said the chemistry program will focus on the health and safety aspect of the marijuana industry.

Steven Johnson is the chairman for the School of Science and Medicine with LSSU. He said the program will give students the opportunity to travel for internships.

“There was a lot of interest as well from possible partners in states like Colorado, Oregon and California,” Johnson said. “So I think these students will definitely have a chance to travel for summer internships and to look at industrial organizations.”

He said the program is structured to allow current chemistry majors to change their degree - or add marijuana classes to their studies.

“What we’ve done is we’ve looked at an accelerated roll-out to the program where we can really cater to this students,” Johnson said. “And allow them to not only earn their chemistry degree but their cannabis chemistry degree as well.”

The chemistry program will be filled with lab tests on the different effects of marijuana.

“Laboratories that can do analysis on all these various products for pesticides, residual solvents, and concentrations, and even toxins from various bacteria and molds will be really important,” Johnson said.

LSSU will also begin offering a marijuana business major.
