The Kalamazoo Public Schools are bringing more diversity to the books in the district’s classrooms.

The Kalamazoo Public Schools have begun adding books featuring diverse characters. Kalamazoo School Superintendent Michael Rice says that involves 50 second-grade and 50 third-grade classrooms in the district. Rice says he hopes that will help encourage children of color to read and let them imagine more possibilities for themselves in the future:
“Recognize the importance of children actually being able not only to read about others, but to read about people who look like themselves.”
Rice says KPS plans to add books to 300 classrooms through the diversity program by this time next year.
