Central Michigan University officials respond to racist comments left on student dorm room

Central Michigan University

Central Michigan University’s President responded Thursday to reports of racist remarks left on a dorm room message board in one of the university’s residence halls.

Pictures of the message board circulating on social media indicated that students reached out to local police after the racist comments were found.

According to the posts, all of the women in the dorm room are black.

In his remarks, President Bob Davies said the comments were not only an attack on the three young women of color but quote “an attack on all of us.”

Davies said the university was investigating the incident and that racism, misogyny, bigotry, and hatred will not be tolerated on campus.

CMU’s Chief Diversity Officer also spoke on the incident. He said CMU continues to support victims and, he hopes, send a message to whoever wrote the racist message.

“What we hope that the writer is seeing right now is the outpouring of support and coming together from students, from faculty, from staff, from the administration, reaffirmation of the values that we try to promote and stand for here at CMU.”

Students organized a sit-in Thursday night to show solidarity with the students who received the racist comments.
