A state program that feeds students during summer months has become the largest of its type in the country.

The program is run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Ever since Detroit joined the program, Michigan has the largest program in the country.

Lynn Sutfin is a spokesperson with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

“It provides them cards like bridge cards basically that have 30 dollars of nutritious food on them per month so they can go to the store they can get eggs, they can get milk, they can get fruits and vegetables.”

Sutfin said the cards can be used at any WIC authorized store and at summer food sites that are often housed at public schools.

She said this year more than 170-thousand students qualify for assistance.

You can text the word “food” to 877877 and enter your zip code to get information on active summer meal sites near you.
