The Flint Promise Scholarship, which will help support Flint students secondary education goals, launched Wednesday with a 2 million dollar donation.
Tom Gores, owner of the Pistons, and Consumers Energy each donated one million to the scholarship fund.
Katie Carey is the spokesperson for Consumers Energy. She said the scholarship will help get Flint high school students the money they need to attend college.
“Essentially students who live in the Flint boundaries and graduate from a Flint High School would be eligible to get the Flint promise. That would start with the class of 2018.”
Carey said the details of the scholarship haven’t been ironed out because they hope to raise more money for the fund.
“The goal is to raise 5 million dollars and depending on what level we can reach we’ll determine those final details.”
Carey said once more people chip into the fund they will be able to iron out the details.
“There’s a group of community stakeholders who are working to complete the design process, figure out specific and logistics as it relates to the Flint Promise.”
Carey said Governor Rick Snyder reached out to them for help in establishing the scholarship fund.
The Flint Promise is expected to start with the class of 2018.
