Michiganders flock to bottle returns

If you’ve been itching to clear out all the bottles that have accumulated over the past few months you have a lot of company.

The state shut down bottle returns in March, and the service officially reopened Monday.

People were lined up around the corner at the Meijer in Cadillac, ready to cash in on their cartfuls of empty bottles and cans.

Liz Truax has been storing her containers in her garage.

For her, this cash back is crucial.

“I cash ‘em in for my student loan payments,” she said

Though some stores are now required to take returns, the state allowed  them to do so earlier this month.

Stores can take safety measures including limiting the deposit refund amount to $25, and cutting back on the number of machines and hours of operation.
