The Bay Mills Indian Community has announced a partnership with an online sports betting group.
State officials say online sports betting isn’t expected to launch in Michigan until late 2020 at the earliest, but some companies are already establishing a foothold in the state.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board is currently drafting administrative rules for online gaming.
Draftkings is one of the largest online fantasy sport betting companies in the country.
Bryan Newland is the President of the Bay Mills Indian Community. He said the tribal partnership with Draftkings is good for the tribe.
“The deal is going to boost our brand, it is going to generate revenues for our tribal government and local communities. We’re really excited about it.”
Newland said even as their casino reopens, some people may prefer online gaming.
“We know that there are a lot of people who are going to be reluctant to come out and gather with others indoors. This is another tool in our toolbox that will allow us to generate revenues for tribal governments and provide public health services for our community.”
Newland said Michigan is the first state where tribes will operate online betting.
