This week the IRS extended the federal tax filing deadline to July 15th.
But Michigan’s deadline has yet to change.
The state’s tax filing deadline is still just days after the coronavirus stay at home order is expected to be lifted - on April 15th.
Republican State Representative Shane Hernandez said he’d like to see that change.
“In fact my mother in law is in the tax preparation business so I get lobbied every day right from my own family on thinking that this is something that needs to be done.”
Hernandez said tax preparation is not an essential service under the Governor’s stay at home order.
“Tax preparation is not considered essential. People cannot leave their house to go have it done. So this is something I think the extra time is necessary as well.”
A spokesperson from the treasury said there are no official announcements as yet. But, they said, things are changing hourly and daily.
UPDATE: Just after 5PM on Friday Governor Whitmer announced she would extend the Michigan tax filing deadline to July 15th, matching the new federal filing deadline.
"Michiganders shouldn't have to worry about filing their income taxes in the midst of a pandemic," the Governor said in a press release. "This executive order provides immediate income tax assistance to people as they continue to stay home and stay safe druing this crisis."
