Manufacturing groups in Michigan are welcoming President Trump’s proclamation that he’s lifting tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico, effective Monday. Manufacturers say the move should pave the way for a new deal to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Companies in Michigan complain the year-long trade dispute between the U-S and Canada has cost them billions of dollars and put existing jobs at risk.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the retaliatory tariffs were causing harm to workers on both sides of the border.
The Michigan Manufacturers Association’s Mike Johnston says the trade standoff hit this state especially hard.
“Canada buys more products from Michigan than any other – you know all the other countries in the world combined.”
Removing the tariffs could also be a boon to the state’s largest city.
One-quarter of all trade goods between the U-S and Canada cross over the Detroit River.
