Michigan launches hemp pilot program

A pilot program has been launched for Michigan farmers to grow industrial hemp.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development launched the program yesterday (Thursday) in time for the 2019 planting season.

Jennifer Holton is the communications director for the MDARD.

“Michigan’s pilot program is going to allow our farmers to explore the production and processing for hemp and be able to determine if this is going to be something financially viable for them.”

Holton said the state will hold public events that can help with filing and expediting the application process.
