A small business in Presque Isle county, Moran Iron Works, recently received the “Historically Underutilized Business Zone”, or HUBZone certificate.
The U.S. Small Business Administration has a goal of awarding at least 3% of all federal contracting dollars to HUBZone certified businesses every year.
In 2017, that amounted to over 80,000 contracts.
“It’s the way you have to play the game to survive and we need to be competitive against our competition,” said Tom Moran, the C.E.O and founder of Moran Iron Works.
In order to receive this award, there are a few different criterias such as the principal office being located in a Federally-mapped HUBZone area and 35% or more of its employees residing within HUBZone regions.
Moran Iron Works also operates a manufacturing facility in Cheboygan county.
