Warmer temperatures are breaking up the ice in the Great Lakes and it’s helping freighters haul loads before the commercial shipping season ends on Monday.

Sean Murphy is a public affairs officer for the United State Coast Guard. He said the warm weather came has its pros and cons for commercial ships.

“In some parts of the river it has opened it up for them but in other parts of the river it’s made it more dynamic as ice is coming off of the shoreline and it’s moving within the river”.

Murphy said lose ice in the river makes it more challenging in certain areas for freighters to navigate through.
