Better Business Bureau gives tips to avoid scams this holiday shopping season

The average holiday shopper will spend close to a thousand dollars on gifts this year.

The Better Business Bureau said it’s easy to get scammed online, and is giving tips to help keep consumers safe.

They say to only buy from retailers you trust, and to double check the website to make sure it’s secure. A web address should start with HTTPS.

Melanie Duquesnel is the CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Michigan.

“When you’re clicking on text messages or other emails that have links in them that link could be spoofed, making it look like it’s from that retailer, but it’s not.”

If you think a deal is too good to be true, it probably is.

“Every time possible, use a credit card not a debit card. Because again, if you’re going to a site that you are unaware of is a hacked site, that debit card gives them the entry to your checking account, and they can drain all your cash in the blink of an eye,” said Duquesnel.

She also said consumers should also try to be home e when the package arrives, so you can take delivery in person.
