Local municipalities can apply for financial assistance

Michigan Department of Treasury

Financially distressed municipalities can apply for grant funding until the end of the week.

The Michigan Department of Treasury is providing over five million dollars to cities, villages and townships who are in financial distress.

Ron Leix is the spokesperson for the department of treasury. He said there are a few ways to qualify for the application.

“Preference is given to applicants for municipalities that meet one or more of the following criteria, could be a financial emergency has been declared in the last ten years, an approved deficit elimination plan for the general fund is currently in place, two or more conditions indicating probable financial distress currently exists.”

Leix said municipalities can be awarded up to two of the five (point) four million dollar grant for community improvement projects.

“Fund special projects or services that move a municipality toward financial stability and free up tax dollars for important services. Last year municipalities received money for water infrastructure projects as well as different public safety initiatives.”

Applications are due Friday, October 20th.
