Pictured Rocks chosen for “America the Beautiful” quarter program

Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee

Starting next year you’ll be able to see Pictured Rocks on the back on your quarters.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has been chosen for the 2018 “America the Beautiful” Quarter Program.

The design features chapel rock, and a white pine on top of the formation.

Susan Reece is with the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

“Chapel rock is really a neat formation, the white pine on there, the root actually connects to the mainland, but it's sort of standing on an island of rock all by itself but that root is the lifeline where it gets most of its nutrients from the mainland, it's a neat formation and very popular place for people to go hike to.”

56 designs of national parks and lakeshores are set to be released between 2010 and 2021.

“Over 400 national park service sites, and to be lucky enough to be chosen is great even here in Michigan we have a lot of competition from other parks like Sleeping Bear Dunes and Isle Royale, they're both beautiful places, it's really an honor for Pictured Rocks to be chosen.”

Reece said the Pictured Rocks quarter will be in circulation beginning  in February.
