The Book of Turtles is written by Sy Montgomery and illustrated by Matt Patterson is a terrifically interesting and beautifully illustrated picture book for readers 5-8 years of age about the world’s turtles. It talks about the long history of turtles from the largest, the Leatherback Sea Turtle to the smallest, the Speckled Padloper Tortoise. There is also a section in the back that tells the child how to interact and care for turtles.

Little Land written and illustrated by Diana Sudyka is a gorgeous and fascinating picture book about the history of the land: its difficulties, needs and triumphs. It is designed for readers 4-8 years of age but will also speak to parents and teachers. The back materials are well researched and very helpful.

How to Write a Poem written by poet and Newbery Medalist Kwame Alexander and poet Deanna Nikaido and illustrated by Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet is a splendid picture book for youngsters 4-8 years of age. As the story moves forth, young readers become more and more involved with sounds, words, their feelings, and poetry. The awesome illustrations are cleverly adorned with wheels and connectors. This picture book is for children 4-8 years of age.

PALACE OF BOOKS written and illustrated by Patricia Polacco is a true story that Polacco lived when she was a child in Battle Creek Michigan. She was introduced to the work of John James Audubon by the Willard Library librarian Mrs. Creavy. This enabled Polacco to develop her visual artistic skills while struggling with dyslexia. The book is beautifully illustrated with all colors of birds front and center. This picture book is for readers 5-8 years of age.

Justice Rising: 12 Amazing Black Women in the Civil Rights Movement written by Katherine Russell-Brown and illustrated by Kim Holt is a beautiful picture book full of history, outstanding illustrations and thoughtful quotations. The twelve women include such names as Ella Baker, Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks, Gloria Richardson, and Jo Ann Robinson.

Evergreen written and illustrated by Caldecott medalist Matthew Cordell is an endearing picture book for children 2-5 years of age about a young squirrel who is afraid of the animals that live in Buckthorn Forest. One day her mother asks her to take homemade soup to Granny Oak who is sick and who lives in the forest. Evergreen faces many difficulties as she goes forth. The “sound words” that pepper the story add great fun as does the map of Buckthorn Forest that is brilliantly illustrated on the hard cover of this delightful book. (Feiwel and Friends) 2023
