The Mark W. Barker is the newest freighter on the Great Lakes – having been Christened last September.

People on the south side of Belle Isle are getting a close-up look at a 639-foot lake freighter that ran aground in the Detroit River this morning. Russ McNamara has more…

The Mark W. Barker was carrying salt from Detroit to Milwaukee when it lost propulsion around 8 a.m. and wound up on the soft, muddy bottom near the island.

Coast Guard Lt. Junior Grade Adeeb Ahmad says no damage or leaks have been reported and the ship is not affecting other boat traffic, but it will take a while to free the vessel and get it underway again.

Russ McNamara is a reporter and host of All Things Considered for 101.9 WDET, presenting local news to the station’s loyal listeners.
