AAA says travelers should book holiday flights before Halloween

Steve Conry

Traveler confidence increased since beginning of the year

The AAA Auto Group has warned holiday travelers to book their flights before Halloween and invest in travel insurance.

Spokesperson for AAA Adrienne Woodland said half of Michigan residents typically book flights before Halloween, which causes availability to drop around the holiday season.

"Time is certainly of the essence for people planning to take a flight this holiday season" she said. "As we get closer to the holidays, airfare often rise as availability shrinks."

Woodland said there have been numerous flight delays and cancellations, so flyers may want to invest in travel insurance to cover the cost of the flight, lost luggage, and hotel rooms.

As the holiday season approaches, traveler confidence increased since the beginning of the year.

Woodland said confidence increased from the beginning of the year and peaked in the summer as people got vaccinated.

"Back in the first quarter of the year, only about 38% of those surveyors said that they felt comfortable," she said. "By the time we got to Q3, about 72% were comfortable. Traveler confidence did take a slight step back this quarter following a resurgence in COVID-19 cases brought on by the delta variant."

AAA plans to release their Thanksgiving travel projections on November 9.
