Back-to-school shopping is like another holiday for retail stores. And this year, experts say sales are returning to normal.
Jennifer Rook with the Michigan Retailers Association says the end of August is the traditional start for back to school.
This year, she says, people are starting early.
“You know Amazon Prime Days and so you had other retailers like Walmart and Target starting sooner, to compete with that. So you had more back to school shopping starting in late June this year versus typically what happens in your few weeks of August.”
Rook said she expects back-to-school sales this year to clock in six percent higher than sales last year.
“Everything seems to be on the up and up, as you’ve seen with retail sales across the board back to school sales are no different. People are preparing for back to school, going back to the classroom, going back to college .”
Rook said she encourages families to shop local, to continue helping Michigan’s economy recover
