Treaty signed by Michigan tribes did not create a reservation in Northwest Michigan Appeals court ruled.
An appeals court ruled this week that sections of Michigan’s northwestern Lower Peninsula are not part of an indian tribal reservation.
The ruling tossed an appeal from the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians.
The U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the treaty of 1855, between the federal government and several bands of the Odawa Indians, did not establisha reservation in Michigan.
It rather gave tribe members individual allotments of land.
Attorneys and tribal representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
