The Traverse City Commission on Monday unanimously passed a regulatory framework to allow up to four adult-use marijuana retail facilities within the city limits.

The commission passed the regulatory framework for marijuana retail facilities as well as two micro businesses. On-site marijuana consumption will not be allowed.

City officials say within the next few weeks they will open up the application process for businesses hoping to set up in Traverse City.

Benjamin Marentette is the Traverse City Clerk. He said he expects it will still be a few months before recreational facilities come online.

“There is a competitive scoring process which is how we determine who gets those four retail licenses.”

Marentette said while people can use marijuana items on private property the businesses will not be a place where residents can smoke or consume marijuana items.
