Kalamazoo Vice Mayor Erin Knott says she plans to pursue a ban on conversion therapy in the city. Knott, who is also Executive Director of the LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Michigan says ultimately there should be a statewide ban. The Huntington Woods City Commission approved an ordinance last week that makes the practice of trying to alter a person’s sexual orientation a civil infraction. Knott says Kalamazoo should follow suit:

17 states and Washington D-C have bans on conversion therapy. Knott says she doesn’t know if conversion therapy is happening in Kalamazoo, but she says it’s important to send a message to state lawmakers that the practice is wrong.
