Governor Gretchen Whitmer issues veto

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a line-item veto of legislation that would have added 10 million dollars to a nearly depleted state fund.

It compensates wrongfully convicted inmates.

Republicans accuse the Democratic governor of playing politics at the expense of those deserving compensation.   Whitmer points her finger at Republican lawmakers.

“Well they’re being victimized by a legislature that’s not doing it right.  They know how they’re supposed to be appropriating money. They know there is an accountable way of doing it.  And there’s a vehicle.  They could do it tomorrow.”

Whitmer says she supports the funding, but it should be included in a spending bill - not the legislation she signed to improve transparency and reporting for the compensation fund.
