State Senator turns in signatures for gubernatorial race

A gubernatorial hopeful is one big step towards getting on the August primary ballot. Republican State Senator Patrick Colbeck turned in his signatures Thursday.

It takes 15-thousand signatures to qualify. Colbeck turned in over 18-thousand. The signatures still have to be checked and certified by election officials. Colbeck says all signatures were gathered by unpaid volunteers.

“It was just totally grassroots, family-type atmosphere. It felt great. That’s what puts wind in the sails for a campaign like this.”

So far, Jim Hines – a doctor from Saginaw Township – has turned in his signatures. Attorney General Bill Schuette and Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley have declared their candidacy. But they haven’t turned in signatures yet.
