The Board has discussed asking for legislation that would codify its new practice of using random sampling to review petition signatures.
Other talks focused on moving from a standard of strict compliance toward substantive compliance when considering petition forms.
Board chair Mary Ellen Gurewitz says it could avoid “gotcha” moments over “insignificant” petition errors.
Gurewitz says it comes down to a matter of appearance.
“Does it have all of the right words and all of the right typeface. Is anything missing that should be there?”
Concerns about the proposed change include that the "substantive compliance" standard could be more confusing than "strict compliance."
