Hill Harper is joining the Democratic primary in the 2024 race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat.

This will be Harper’s first time running for elected office. He’s an actor best known for rolls on TV shows CSI: New York, and The Good Doctor. Speaking at a launch event in Detroit, Harper said a focus of his campaign will be fighting for underserved communities.

“The founding of our country is founded in the idea of freedom. Yet if you look at the systemic history of our country from then until now… it’s been a very reluctant promise of freedom.” said Harper.

Despite being known as an actor, Harper is a graduate of Harvard Law School. He joins a field of Democrats that includes Nasser Beydoun, Pamela Pugh and Elissa Slotkin, among others.
