The National Weather Service is extending its air quality alerts through Friday for much of the state. And the dangerous smoke from Canadian wildfires is already impacting people's health.

Dr. Ike Okereke is a thoracic surgeon and air quality researcher at Henry Ford Health.

"And if you look at the number of admissions for lung related illnesses, that has increased in the last few days." said Okereke.

Okereke says people should seek medical treatment if they're experiencing shortness of breath, and everyone should try to limit their exposure to outdoor air right now.
