Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm says establishing domestic supply chains is vital for both the nation’s economy and its security.

Granholm made her remarks at a forum held by the Detroit Free Press in Birmingham. The Biden administration has promoted the creation of homegrown supply chains for electric vehicle batteries, an area currently dominated by countries like China.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm says depending on foreign nations to deliver goods or power, can have dangerous consequences.

“Because of the war in Ukraine…Europe’s vulnerability because they cannot access Russian natural gas…we all see what it means to have an over-reliance on one party.” said Granholm.

Granholm says its also a reason to pursue renewable energy sources, because she says, access to the wind or sun cannot be weaponized.
