Bills to stop licensed medical professionals from conducting conversion therapy on minors received a state Senate committee hearing today.
Conversion therapy refers to any treatment to change one's sexuality or gender identity.
Democratic Representative Jason Hoskins testified alongside the Senate sponsor of the bills during the hearing. Hoskins says the fact that the bills received a hearing is a good sign.
"I am happy that we're finally taking up this legislation to really get rid of a very discredited practice, a practice that every major medical and mental health organization has said causes irreparable harm in some cases to children."
Some lawmakers are concerned the bills could define conversion therapy too broadly.
Similar bills are slated for a House hearing this week as well.
