Over 60 high school robotics teams from across Michigan are making their way to Houston this week for the robotics world championships.
The FIRST robotics competition is like the Olympic games for high school kids who make robots.
Each team designs, builds, and programs their robot to compete in timed competitions like placing cones on shelves or making their robot throw balls into a net
Hundreds of teams from around the world will be in Houston, that includes Alpena High School’s team Volts Squared.
Lee Fitzpatrick is the communications director for Alpena Public Schools. He says the team has gone to the world championships 6 of the last 7 years.
"We've had lots of successful graduates that have gone on to careers that are directly related to what they learned in the robotics," said Fitzpatrick
Other teams from northern Michigan include Brimley, Otsego, Traverse City Central High School.
