Kildee meets with Mexican, Central American leaders to discuss trade solutions

Michigan's eighth district Congressman Dan Kildee, D-Flint, speaking outside the U.S. Capitol building on March 31, 2022.

Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee recently returned from a trip to South America. He was meeting with leaders there to address the issue of border security in the U.S.

Kildee says the U.S. has a problem on its southern border, but he says the border itself isn’t the sole source of that problem.

That’s why Kildee met with the President of Mexico and other leaders to discuss ways to implement stronger enforcement of labor laws within US-Mexico trade agreements.

"The problems at the border are very much the result of other problems that are driving people from these impoverished undemocratic communities to try to escape," said Kildee.

Kildee says if the quality of life for Mexican workers increases, the less likely it will be for American businesses to undercut U.S. workers and move jobs down south.

Kildee also met with leaders in Guatemala and El Salvador to discuss ways of enforcing human rights violations and encouraging democratic principles in government agencies.
