Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has sent a cease-and-desist notice to a tree-trimming company that’s been allegedly price gouging Gaylord residents following a tornado that injured 44 people and killed 2.
Social media posts indicate that the Canary Tree Service, a Florida-based company, mobilized soon after the tornado struck Gaylord on May 20.
The Attorney General’s office has been monitoring the company since the summer of 2021, when residents in Oakland and Genesee counties accused them of price gouging and misleading them about prices and insurance coverage.
In a written statement, Attorney General Nessel says there is probable cause the company is violating Michigan’s consumer protection act following the Gaylord tornado.
Affidavits show the company submitted invoices to insurance companies well beyond the going market rate.
The Canary Tree Service Company did not respond to our request for comment.
