The first in a series of public meetings to discuss East Lansing’s next budget takes place tonight.

The City Council has until May 24th to vote on adopting a proposed one hundred and twenty six million dollar spending plan.

It’s a nearly nine-million dollar increase over the current budget.

Officials attribute the bump to planned capital improvements as well as to a partial return to normal following pandemic-related disruptions.

The city is also getting millions of dollars in federal relief from the American Rescue Plan Act. That money will go to things like sidewalk replacements and drainage repairs.

Members of the public can learn more during work sessions scheduled for Tuesday nights this month and the next.
