A new report from the University of Michigan Poverty Solutions initiative estimates that more than 20,000 children in Michigan did not have a permanent home in 2019.

The report found that a majority of the state’s youths without permanent homes are not living in homeless shelters. Instead, they're couch surfing at friends' and strangers' homes.

Advocates are asking the state for more homeless shelters and services to reach youth across the state.

The report found that youth of color and transgender youth are more likely to be homeless than their white and cisgender peers.
