House Elections and Ethics Committee hears testimony on voter signature bills

A set of bills that would require more frequent updates to Michigan’s voter database received a hearing before a House committee today.

The bills would require the state to update its signature information for voters when they renew their IDs.

The package would also reduce the number of times people can renew their ID without going in-person to a Secretary of State branch.

"We still believe that it was a good customer service change, that we don’t particularly need to make a change right now to that schedule and flip around and now go back to the eight-year cycle." said Adam Reames, the Michigan Department of State legislative policy director.

The bills’ supporters say the extended time frame is too long to make sure signatures in the state’s voter file are up to date.
