Former Detroit City Councilmember Andre Spivey will serve two years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to bribery charges.
Spivey admitted to taking nearly 36-thousand dollars in bribes to influence his votes on various city contracts and ordinances.
Federal prosecutors sought a 40-month sentence, while Spivey’s attorneys sought probation.
U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts called Spivey’s actions a “complete betrayal of the public trust” and part of a “pattern of corruption.”
She says the 24-month sentence is in line with past corruption judgements against other public officials, both in Detroit and its suburbs.
Spivey’s sentence will begin in July, following the high school graduation of his daughter.
