The Detroit Public Schools Community District is switching to virtual learning one day a week next month, in response to rising COVID-19 cases.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti announced the district will have “Virtual Fridays” in December. Vitti cited concerns about COVID safety, the need for more time to thoroughly clean school buildings, and what he called “mental health relief.”

Vitti also suggested that the district will strongly consider requiring students and staff to get vaccinated. He says that’s the best way to ensure everyone’s safety and ensure that students can consistently attend schools in-person.

The district’s Renaissance High School is also closed for the next ten days because of a COVID outbreak there.

Renaissance are scheduled to return to classrooms after Thanksgiving break.
