Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s vetoed four election-related bills Sunday, including some that had bipartisan support, but Republicans say that this fight isn’t over.
Whitmer said in her veto letter that her biggest complaint is the legislation perpetuates the “Big Lie” that the 2020 election was stolen, and the bills foment distrust in elections. Whitmer also said many of the practices defined in the bills are already used by election officials.
Republican Representative Ann Bolin chairs the House Elections and Ethics committee. She says best practices should be enshrined in state law.
“I’m not going to step back because the governor’s threatening to veto.”
Whitmer said she vetoed a bill that would’ve required training for poll challengers because it lacked funding.
