All 83 county prosecutors offices in Michigan are struggling with a huge backlog of cases and not enough staff to handle them.
That's according to Doug Lloyd. He's President of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan. He says the backlog began during the pandemic, and it has worsened because many of the newer cases are more serious.
"More gun violence is occurring, more actual physical violence, drugs are prevalent - whether peoples' tempers are just short - do you blame the pandemic - I don't know." Doug Lloyd said.
Lloyd says county prosecutors are very limited in what they can offer to recruit new assistant prosecutors. That's because their budgets are dependent on the county, which has many other programs it has to fund.
