23 elected leaders in Ingham County and the county sheriff have signed a letter rebuking County Prosecutor Carol Siemon over a recently announced policy.
Siemon announced in August she would dial back use of charge that can add to someone’s prison sentence if they’re found to have a gun while committing or attempting to commit a felony.
She says it has been used disproportionately against Black Michiganders.
But 23 local officials signed a letter this moth saying they’re concerned the change will fuel gun violence.
That’s according to a news release from County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth who has asked Siemon to reconsider the policy.
Lasing Mayor Andy Schor was among the letter’s supporters while East Lansing Mayor Jessy Gregg declined to sign.
