Former Michigan Congressman Paul Mitchell has died. The 64 year old had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

Paul Mitchell helped build a successful vocational education business before turning to politics.

His first run for Congress in Michigan’s Fourth district ended when he lost in the Republican primary in 20-14. Mitchell moved to Michigan’s Tenth Congressional and won the seat in 20-16.

During his two terms, Mitchell focused on trade, health care, immigration, among other issues.

But Mitchell in his retirement announcement...he said he’d grown tired of Washington politics...

“It appears to me that rhetoric overwhelms policy and politics consumes much of the oxygen in this city.”

In the final weeks of his last term, Mitchell left the Republican party...writing GOP leaders that inciting public mistrust in the 2020 election was unacceptable to him.
