The state Senate is due back in Lansing on Wednesday to vote on three budget bills as schools and local governments are about to begin their fiscal years.

Schools and local governments have to have their budgets finalized by July 1st, while officially, the state can take another three months.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and legislative Republicans have clashed over budget priorities and attempts to restrict her use of emergency powers.

At an event in East Lansing, the governor brushed off those fights and said there’s no reason the state budget can’t be finalized this week.

“The fact of the matter is I’ve got a job to do and all this other noise and ugliness that’s been directed at me is not going to distract me from doing my job.”

The Senate would have to adopt the budget bills exactly as they were approved by the state House. Otherwise the process will linger into the summer.
