Detroit City Council is rolling out new regulations for recreational marijuana businesses. The unanimously approved ordinance gives priority to Detroiters.

Under the “Detroit Legacy” program, long-term city residents will receive more than 50-percent of the new licenses. City Councilmember James Tate helped author the new ordinance.

“You must have lived in the City of Detroit for a minimum of 15 out of the last 30 years and be a resident of the City of Detroit for a year prior to submitting your application,” said Tate.

Tate says the social equity program lowers the residency requirements for applicants with past-marijuana convictions and for those who qualify as low-income.

Detroit will allow for 150 dispensaries to set up shop within the city, equally split between medical and recreational use.
