President Donald Trump’s campaign filed a lawsuit to challenge how Michigan has counted absentee votes, but the legal action was filed as that process was wrapping up.

The Trump campaign lawsuit asked Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to call a halt to the counting, claiming partisan poll challengers at one counting location were not able to do their jobs.

Benson said the process was handled fairly.

“Politics will be politics, but I’m standing with the voters and the election workers throughout the state who’ve been meticulously, transparently tabulating votes,” Benson said.

The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

The lawsuit was filed just hours before Benson announced the counting is done. Once certified, Michigan’s 16 electoral votes will go to Democrat Joe Biden. But there could still be a legal fight.
