The Bay City Commission is looking to assist city residents that are struggling with utility bills during the pandemic.

On Tuesday, the city opted into a water assistance program through the state.

The program is available to residents participating in the food assistance program with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Bay City City Manager Dana Muscott said the goal is to help the city residents.

“It’s another tool for the city to use to help our residents while they're struggling with paying their bills through COVID.”

A maximum of $700 on both water and sewer charges will be available.

Muscottt said as long as funding is available, the city will provide a 25 percent credit on a customer’s water and sewer bill. The state will reimburse that 25 percent.
