Police say a 36-year-old man crashed into a senior home around midnight June 11 in Bad Axe.
Officers say the car was traveling eastbound on M-53 when the driver lost control, hit a tree and crashed into the Huron County Medical Care Facility.
Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said the man, accompanied by his 5-year-old son, had been in the area picking up a puppy.
Hanson said the man fled the scene with his son, stole a car from the Misty Meadows Mobile Home Park, and traveled to his mother’s home in Croswell. Police made attempts to contact the man but were unable to do so before he fled the scene again.
The vehicle was not removed until later the next day as structural damage assessments had to be made.
The puppy was found inside the crashed vehicle. Hanson said it was taken by a neighbor who said they would bring it to a veterinarian.
