Traverse City Area Public Schools may have a new superintendent.

In a virtual meeting last night the school board unanimously picked John VanWagoner for the role.

He’s currently the superintendent of Alpena Public Schools.

Several board members said his experience as a northern Michigan educator was key to the job.

Here he is in a community forum from last week.

“As a base-funded district … just like Traverse City, a large transportation system to have to pay for. These are all challenges we are facing and we have to be preparing right now.”

The Board plans to finalize his contract at a June 8th meeting.

Previous district superintendent Ann Cardon resigned in September after less than 3 months on the job.
