An Upper Peninsula business that makes cold-weather apparel has shifted gears and is now producing personal protection equipment.

You might know Stormy Kromer from its winter hats. But ever since the governor’s stay-at-home order came down those production lines are silent.

Gina Thorsen is president of the Ironwood-based company. She said a couple of weeks ago they started getting inquiries about masks from medical facilities in Wisconsin and Michigan, and as far away as Florida. She said they had the machines and the materials, so it was a no-brainer.

“It didn’t take much time for us to think this over and just know that it was the right thing to do.”  :05

Stormy Kromer is now making about 2,000 masks a day, and is doing prototyping and initial work on gowns, as well.
