Giving up or reducing the amount of driving affects older men and women differently.  AAA Michigan says an ongoing study found differences in a survey of nearly three-thousand older adults over five years.

"Compared to women, men over the age of 65 who've reduced their driving in the last year report lower levels of social support when it comes to advice, suggestions, and information about issues they may be facing."

Woodland says it's a good idea for older adults and their families to plan ahead for the day when it's time to hang up their keys. She says that includes other options like carpooling and public transportation.
