Education advocates wearing red shirts filled the lawn of the state Capitol Tuesday. Education advocates say the school aid budgets under consideration in the state Legislature are inadequate.

The teachers and school staff members at the rally say they want the Legislature to adopt Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s proposed school aid budget. It calls for more than what the GOP-controlled legislature is proposing.

Republican Senator Wayne Schmidt worked on the Senate’s version of the school aid budget.

“The end of the day, the governor would like to see more money for education, Senate Republicans would like to see more money for education. That’s where we agree and that’s what we’re doing.”

Schmidt says the Legislature has to work with the money that it has available.
